Lanarkshire Boys' Brigade group carry on camping thanks to support from house-building firm

Members of the 8th Airdrie Boys' Brigade were very happy campers after being given the chance to enjoy the great outdoors thanks to a house-building firm.

Dawn Homes helped to organise an exciting, activity-packed trip to Auchengillan Outdoor Centre for the intrepid youngsters by donating £500 to the team.

The Brigade organisation, which has members aged five-to-18, arrange fun game nights and various activities, including marching competitions, and raise awareness of key messages through posters, such as mental wellbeing.

As many of their members had never been camping, captain Derek Craig, the 10 officers who volunteer with the group and the youths' parents were keen to arrange a trip jam-packed with games, fun and camp songs around the fire.

Anchor Boy officer Amanda Dempsey, a legal secretary at Wallace Quinn who volunteers with the group, told Lanarkshire Live : "We try to offer a range of activities for the kids to broaden their horizons, as well as life skills and to generally have fun.

"We’ve been limited with what we could do over the past few years, so we were especially excited to arrange a camping trip for the boys.

"As a voluntary group, we rely on support from our friends, families and the local community, so the financial support from Dawn Homes was a great help.

“We went to Auchengillan Outdoor Centre and the boys had the best time playing hide and seek, and 'toilet tig', as they call it. They even had a go at axe throwing and abseiling.

"Everyone had such a brilliant time, which was great to see.”

John Moultrie, 12, from the Company section has been a member of the Boys' Brigade since he was five-years-old and is nicknamed the "Siren" among his peers as he is the loudest of the group.

He said: "I always look forward to camping with the Boys' Brigade. You get to swim, play games and have fun with your friends.

"This year was even better as we got to try axe throwing, which was really cool.”

The 8th Airdrie Boys' Brigade's meetings take place every Wednesday in Airdrie High Church; for more information, visit here.
