Lanarkshire biker hits the road as he takes on charity challenge

A Lanarkshire biker was an easy rider recently as he raised funds for a charity close to his heart.

Eddie Larkin is a member of the Glasgow Slow Riderz group, and the 21 strong outfit decided they wanted to help out a good cause.

The Cambuslang man joined his pals in taking part in a specialist scavenger hunt from the Great Western Retail Park to Inveraray to The Green Welly and beyond, all in search of Spiney the Diney - the cuddly mascot toy for the Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus (SBH) Scotland charity.

Multiple mascots had been carefully placed in businesses around the west of Scotland ready to be found by eagle-eyed bikers, with the route setting out from the Great Western Retail Park and stopping in Helensburgh, Rest and Be Thankful, Inveraray, The Green Welly and The Drovers Inn.

Eddie, who's one of the admins of the Glasgow Slow Riderz Facebook Group, was delighted to help out the good cause.

He told Lanarkshire Live : "This was not an average bike run. We were delighted to do something for charity and once we’d chosen SBH Scotland, we realised the charity had personal connections with many of our friends and family which made it all the more special.

"It’s a great feeling to know that by doing something we all love, we’re helping to support families in the Glasgow area."

SBH Scotland have provided support and information to anyone affected by the rare, complex disabilities of spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus for over 55 years, with clinical and support workers based across the country.

They offer a range of services across Scotland including 1-2-1 support in homes, hospitals and nurseries/schools, a helpline, health and wellness clinics and support groups and outings.

The bikers raised over £600 in total.

Deborah Roe, Director of Fundraising at SBH Scotland said: "We’re incredibly grateful to the Glasgow Slow Riderz for coming out and showing their support for our charity. The toys which were being sought on the day hold a special meaning for our families.

"They are the first gift we take to our families in the hospital when their babies are born, and they mark the beginning of a lifetime commitment of dedicated support, starting with the special Spiney the Diney Children’s Club.

"By searching for the toys and raising money in the process, this amazing group of bikers are helping us continue to provide this vital support to all those affected by these lifelong disabilities. Thank you so much to everyone who took part and donated."
