Lanarkshire 94-year-old left 'terrified' after alleged attack on busy street

A Lanarkshire great grandmother has told of her fear in leaving her home after an alleged attack in broad daylight on a busy Lanarkshire street.

Jessie Sullivan, from Rutherglen, was returning home from the bingo at around 4pm on Wednesday, March 2, when the incident took place.

As Jessie, 94, got off a bus and walked down the town's Main Street, she claims a woman snatched her handbag from her shoulder, causing her to fall.

The shocked pensioner told Lanarkshire Live's sister title, the Daily Record: "I don't know where she came from but I was flat on my back."

Jessie said that two men came to help her and one managed to retrieve her handbag, which only contained bingo cards and markers and bus tickets.

She added: "They offered to take me home and I was quite frightened and I thought they might be working with her."

Instead, Jessie was taken home by a girl from a nearby garage whom she has known since she was a baby and who had witnessed the alleged assault.

A 45-year-old woman has since been arrested in connection with the incident.

Jessie's 73-year-old daughter, Gina Cotterill, took her mum to hospital, as she said that she had a sore back as a result of the fall.

There, she received an X-ray which revealed that nothing was broken but she was given painkillers to help with her sleep.

Jessie, who has lived in sheltered accommodation for eight years, said she has been left "terrified" by the incident.

She said of the suspect: "She's really given me a fright. I don't really feel myself. I'm terrified to go out and that's not right.

"I was born and bred in Rutherglen and never had this before. I was 94 the Sunday before I got this. I don't think it's right.

"I don't think it's right that at 94 you can't walk the streets."

Her grandchildren have been helping Jessie by doing the shopping and dropping her off and picking her up from the bingo.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said:" Enquiries are continuing after a 94-year-old woman was robbed of her handbag on Main Street, Rutherglen on Wednesday, 2 March, 2022. The lady was not injured.

"A 45-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the incident and enquiries are ongoing.

"Any information can be passed to officers at Rutherglen Police Station via 101 quoting reference number 2339 of Wednesday, 2 March, 2022."
