Lanark ASC make waves with medals haul from West District Championships

A 14-strong Lanark Amateur Swimming Club team took nine medals from the West District Swimming Championships, held at Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow.

Seniors were first up on the Saturday, with Abbie Barnstaple, 15, taking third place in the 200m butterfly.

Millie McArthur, 16, won silver in 50m backstroke.

Both girls posted personal best times, as did Ross Carswell (3), Ian Henderson (3), Caitlyn Hamilton (2), Benji Jones (4) and Euan McLeod (3).

Three younger swimmers won medals on the Sunday.

Evi Mackie, 13, went through the card, winning five West District titles from as many swims, in 100m butterfly, 200m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 800m freestyle and 400m individual medley.

Katie Towers, 14, was second in 50m breaststroke and Craig Shaw was third in 50m breaststroke.

Orlaith Jeffrey, Lucy Taylor (2), Alex Douglas (2) and Luke Devlin set new personal best times.

After the two-day championships, coach Karen Kelly said: “A big well done to all the swimmers.

Senior swimmers Abbie Barnstaple (left) and Millie McArthur were also successful in the tournament at Tollcross (Karen Kelly)

“On the Saturday it was so pleasing to see Abbie win her first ever district medal, and was well deserved.

“Millie felt a bit under the weather and battled for her silver in backstroke.

“The stand-out swim on Saturday was Benji’s 100m breaststroke (1.1.63), which is a huge PB.

“The juniors did well on the Sunday.

“Evi showed a maturity beyond her years to win five titles.

“Her stand-out swim was the 800m freestyle.

“Katie climbed out of her sick bed and showed great resilience to win her silver, and it is heartening to see Craig now regularly among the medals in breaststroke.

“Luke made his district debut for us and we welcomed Alex to the club from Motherwell/Wishaw.

“On Wednesday, 13 of our swimmers will compete at the South Lanarkshire Schools Swimming Championships.”
