Dan Wells and Emilien Carde triumphed in Race 2 of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia, becoming 2024 Champions at the end of a hard-fought 50-minute encounter that had its fair share of incidents and surprises.
At Jerez de la Frontera, where the Lamborghini World Finals get underway from tomorrow, this morning the sun broke through the clouds that had dumped a lot of water on the Andalusian track last night.
The start was flagged after a couple of laps of the Safety Car and it was polesitter Miki Koyama who immediately made a mistake while braking into turn 1, the Japanese driver betrayed by the damp track, leaving the door wide open for Jonathan Cecotto to take the lead and get away.
On lap 4 however, the Safety Car entered again to enable the removal of the Huracan of Wenjun Xie (610 Racing by Absolute), who got stuck in the sand at turn 15 without suffering any consequences. The restart was on lap 6 and Cecotto started pushing again to distance himself from his rivals, handing over the car to Gavin Huang with an advantage of over 7 seconds to administer.
The Arrows Racing driver, however, was quickly caught and on lap 16 Hon Chio Leong slipped past him on the inside; a subsequent contact caused damage to Huang's left front and sent the SJM Iron Lynx Theodore Racing driver into a spin, leaving the lead to Wells.
The DW Evans GT driver then pulled away to a comfortable 10s lead to take the win in the PRO Class ahead of Jaajar/Rafique (Arrows Racing), who won in the PRO/AM Class, while the overall podium went to Changwoo Lee (SQDA-GRIT), first in the AM category and 2024 Champion despite a spin at the chicane while trying to pressure Jaafar.
The Top 5 also included Pirttilahti/Lee (DW Evans GT) and Couto/Chen (Madness Racing), the latter PRO/AM Champions completing the relative podium, ahead of the other winners of the AM Class, namely Hong/He (Madness) and Phuakkarawut/Leewattanavalagul (YK Motorsports).
Eighth place went to Leong/Koyama in a race to forget between initial errors and the previously mentioned incident, taking home second place in the PRO, while Huang/Tai (Arrows Racing) and Luo/Song (Vortex Racegraph) completed the Top10.
Next up were all the Lamborghini Cup Class competitors: eleventh place overall sealed the title for the brothers Haziq and Hairie Zairel Oh, winners of this round with Supachai Weeraborwornpong (Siamgas Corse) and Kumar Prabakaran (SJM Iron Lynx Theodore Racing) on the category podium, beating Ma Chin Min (Arrows Racing)
