LaLiga president Javier Tebas has take another swipe at Paris Saint-Germain and Kylian Mbappe following the striker's decision to snub a move to Spain.
Real Madrid are long-term admirers of the French striker and had been courting Mbappe for over a year ahead of the summer, where it was expected the 23-year-old would quit PSG following the conclusion of his contract. However, Mbappe instead decided to pen a bumper new three-year deal with the French champions - leaving Los Blancos stunned.
Mbappe's U-turn also enraged LaLiga, with Tebas in particular vocal in his criticism of both Mbappe and PSG. And the 60-year-old has made the most of another opportunity to lash out at the striker.
During a public presentation on the new LaLiga squad spending limits, Tebas was asked whether the Spanish league was suffering from a lack of star names following the departure of high-profile players such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in recent years.
Tebas said: “If we look at the clubs where they are, we see that these are clubs that are pouring money. Of course, we would have liked them to come, but they weren’t there last year either."
And Tebas then took a swipe at Mbappe's decision to remain in France with PSG, adding: “Mbappe stayed in a championship that is not competitive.”
Join the debate! Do you think Mbappe will still end up moving to Real Madrid in the future? Let us know here.
Despite turning down Real Madrid's advances and committing his future to PSG, Mbappe appeared to leave the door open for a future switch to the Bernabeu with comments made earlier this week.
When he was asked if a move to Los Blancos could be rekindled in the future, Mbappe told The New York Times : "You never know what is going to happen. I've never been there but it seems like it's my home or something."
But it remains to be seen if Real Madrid will have the appetite to revisit the move in the future after club president Florentino Perez was left red-faced following Mbappe's rejection.
Perez made it clear back in June that the Spanish giants had moved on from a deal for Mbappe, insisting: "Real Madrid will always continue to work on having the best players, but today Mbappé is already forgotten."
PSG have profited greatly from Mbappe's decision to remain in France, with the potent striker making an electric start to the new campaign. Mbappe has already notched nine goals in just six games for Christophe Galtier's side, including a brace in the midweek win over Juventus in the Champions League.
