Lala Anthony brings hope and change to Rikers Island inmates

Lala Anthony brings hope and mentorship to young inmates at Rikers Island.

In an extraordinary effort to bring hope and support to inmates at Rikers Island, a notorious prison facility in New York, actress and activist Lala Anthony has launched a program called 360. The initiative aims to provide mentorship and re-entry skills to young men incarcerated at the facility, not just during the holiday season, but throughout the year.

The program specifically targets young adults aged 18 to 21, who make up about 10% of Rikers Island's incarcerated population. With the goal of helping these young men reintegrate successfully into society, Lala Anthony has become a beacon of hope for those who often feel hopeless.

Motivated by her personal experiences and a desire to make a difference, Anthony shared her inspiration behind the program. 'Growing up, I witnessed loved ones facing incarceration, and I always felt helpless. But now, in a position to effect change, I am determined to make a difference,' she explained.

The 360 program offers a safe haven for these young men, providing them with mentorship, re-entry strategies, and opportunities for personal growth. Through open and honest discussions, participants examine the circumstances that led them to Rikers Island and work towards positive change.

One of the program's success stories is Darius Lewis, who has been at Rikers since June, charged with first-degree robbery. Lewis attributed the transformation in his mindset to the program, stating that it showed him he didn't have to conform to negative expectations. 'I don't have to be what everybody's expecting. I don't have to be ruthless,' Lewis shared.

The positive impact of the 360 program extends beyond personal growth. Not only have participants witnessed a shift in their own lives, but they have also become assets to their communities. Lala Anthony emphasizes the importance of compassion and accountability, urging the young men to use their time in jail wisely and make a change for the better.

While Rikers Island has faced ongoing challenges and criticism, such as high levels of violence and safety concerns, Lala Anthony's program shines a light on the potential for transformation and growth. By providing a supportive environment and equipping incarcerated individuals with the tools they need to succeed upon release, the program plays a vital role in breaking the cycle of recidivism.

The 360 program has shown remarkable results, with participants expressing excitement for the future, a desire to pursue education, and a commitment to finding employment opportunities. True to her dedication, Lala Anthony wants these young men to understand that there is a future beyond their current circumstances, and she aims to empower them to plan for that future.

As the program continues to make a difference in the lives of those incarcerated at Rikers Island, Lala Anthony's efforts provide an inspiring example of compassion and hope. Through her dedication and the support of the 360 program, these young men are finding the strength to shape their own futures, leaving behind a troubled past and embracing the possibilities that lie ahead.
