A section of Syro Malabar Catholic Church believers on Friday evening took out a march to the Bishop’s House in Ernakulam, demanding the removal of Cardinal George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, in the wake of the Supreme Court rejecting his plea to stay the proceedings against him in the controversial church land deal.
A group of lay people under Almaya Munnettam organised the march and demanded that the responsibilities held by Cardinal Alencherry be brought directly under the Vatican, by handing them over of the Apostolic Administrator.
The group said in a statement that the Vatican had removed Bishop Franco Mulakkal from his responsibilities as Jalandhar Bishop when the Supreme Court asked him to face trial. “The situation is similar now,” the statement said.
