Lady Gaga's Oscars dress channeled Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's

If there was an Oscar for delivering the finest red carpet magic over awards season, this year it would have to go to Lady Gaga.

After wearing everything from custom Celine to Valentino Couture, the singer ended her A Star Is Born era on a sartorial high note at the Oscars on Sunday night.

The double nominee channelled Audrey Hepburn's iconic Breakfast at Tiffany's look in an Alexander McQueen gown for the finale event of red carpet season.

She's been moving away from the avant-garde outfits she favoured in her music career, towards more sleek and classic designs. And at first glance, the custom strapless Alexander McQueen gown, designed for Gaga by Alexander McQueen’s creative director Sarah Burton, seemed every bit the classic Hollywood starlet ensemble. However the dress came with an exaggerated, protruding silhouette at the hip and was accessorised with elbow-length leather gloves.

This sculptural design echoed the iconic ‘Bell Jar’ shaped dresses that Alexander McQueen himself sent down the runway at his Spring 2009 ready-to-wear show, and imbued the otherwise classic look with a typically Gaga quirkiness.

She accessorised with the Tiffany Diamond from Tiffany & Co.— a 128.54 carat diamond that has only been worn three times at major award ceremonies throughout its 142 year history. It was last worn by Audrey Hepburn in 1962 when she posed for the poster art for Breakfast at Tiffany's.

To round off the Hepburn tribute, Gaga styled her hair in a Holly Golightly-esque up-do and kept her makeup simple other than a cat-eye flick and full, fluttery lashes.
