Offensive tackle is a top NFL draft need for the Pittsburgh Steelers. There’s no denying that. But according to NFL draft analyst Tony Pauline, one offensive tackle the Steelers will not be targeting is Ohio State’s Dawand Jones.
Pauline appeared on the “Steelers Sanctuary” podcast recently and talked about how the Steelers didn’t appreciate the lack of effort Jones put in at the Ohio State pro day.
Dawand Jones is falling down draft boards. He had one phenomenal day of practice at the Senior Bowl, but then he packed it in. Didn’t practice the next two days. Didn’t play in the game. Went to the Combine, ran the 40, did position drills. I was at the Ohio State Pro Day with Mike Tomlin and those guys, and they were very [upset] because Jones did nothing at his Pro Day.
As Pauline pointed out, Jones mailed it in at the Senior Bowl and didn’t do a full workout at the combine either. The hype around Jones started to swell in the offseason when his freakish measurables, including his unreal wingspan, came out. But his film has never backed up his size. Taking Jones off the board can only help the Steelers look elsewhere for an answer.
