Labour wins Stretford and Urmston by-election with increased vote share

Labour has comfortably held onto its parliamentary seat for Stretford and Urmston after voters went to the polls for a by-election. Andrew Western will represent the constituency after securing 69.4% of the vote, meaning the party has increased its share of the vote.

Constituents voted for a new MP on Thursday (December 15) following the resignation of Kate Green. She was first elected to represent the seat in 2010 and won 60.3% of the votes at the last general election in 2019.

But the former shadow cabinet member resigned her seat after taking on a new role as deputy mayor for Greater Manchester, with her new responsibility for policing meaning she could not take on both roles. Mr Western, who has served as leader of Trafford Council since May 2018, retained the seat for Labour.

With the votes counted at Old Trafford football stadium, the home of Manchester United, Labour secured 12,828 votes. The turnout for the vote was 25.8% - far lower than the constituency's 69.2% turnout in 2019.

Conservative candidate Emily Carter-Kandola finished in second place with 2,922 votes and a share of 15.8%, which was lower than the 27.5% vote share the party received in the 2019 vote. Green Party candidate Dan Jerrome finished third.
