Labour's Kirsty Williams has been elected as the new councillor for East Kilbride West.
The result from yesterday's South Lanarkshire Council by-election for Ward 9 saw Ms Williams elected with 1386 (40 per cent) of first preference votes - up by 14 per cent on last year's council elections.
The election was held after SNP councillor Ali Salamati stepped down and saw a swing of 14 per cent, with the SNP dropping to third place behind the Tories on first preferences.
Tory candidate Bill Dorrian came second on 26 per cent, a rise of six percentage points, with 904 first preferences.
The SNP's Robert Gillies won 778 or 23 per cent, down from 31 per cent in 2022.
Just 26 per cent of those registered turned out to vote.
Commenting on the result, Scottish Labour Leader Anas Sarwar tweeted: "Another incredible result! Congratulations to our newest Scottish Labour Councillor Kirsty Williams and well done to all our amazing team all the ground. You are helping deliver the change Scotland needs!"
Scottish Labour Deputy Leader Jackie Baillie tweeted: "Congratulations Kirsty Williams for her win in East Kilbride West - and well done to the amazing team who worked hard campaigning! Change is coming with Labour.
"A fitting present for Humza Yousaf for his first 100 days as First Minister - a Labour gain from SNP - and the SNP in third place."
Tweeting her support, Central Scotland MSP Monica Lennon said: "Congratulations to Kirsty Williams on winning the East Kilbride West by-election. A fantastic swing to Scottish Labour and a brilliant effort by all our activists."
Other candidates running included Cameron Eadie from the Scottish Greens, Kristofer Keane from the Independents, Jonathan Jack Richardson from the Scottish Family Party and Jake Stevenson from the Scottish Liberal Democrats.
East Kilbride West is a three member ward with an electorate of around 13,350 and approximately 1290 postal votes.
There was a spot for one elected representative to serve the ward.
The election was conducted under the Single Transferable Vote system. Voters were issued with one white ballot paper and asked to vote using numbers in order of their choice.
