DOZENS of cross-party MPs have backed a call for an independent inquiry into the UK's involvement in the bombardment of Gaza.
Ex-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called for a Chilcot-style inquiry last month in a letter to the Prime Minister.
This has now been signed by more than 30 MPs from Labour, SNP, Green Party, Sinn Fein, Plaid Cymru and the Independent Alliance.
Corbyn has pushed for "full co-operation from Government ministers involved in decision-making processes since October 2023".
Gordon Brown ordered the Chilcot Inquiry in June 2009 to look into the Labour government and particularly his predecessor Tony Blair’s decision-making when it came to the UK’s involvement in the war in Iraq.
The seven-year-long inquiry ultimately ruined Blair’s reputation, exposing his subservient relationship to US president George W Bush and found that the UK had not properly exhausted the peace process.
Some of the signatories of Corbyn's letter include Labour MPs Richard Burgon, Diane Abbott Ian Byrne, Jon Trickett, Neil Duncan-Jordan and Imran Hussain, as well as independent MP Zarah Sultana who was suspended by Labour last year.
SNP MPs who have signed include Chris Law, Graham Leadbitter and Brendan O'Hara.
Corbyn said on Twitter/X: "This is not going away. We will campaign for as long as it takes to establish the truth."
Last month, I wrote to the Prime Minister calling for an independent inquiry into the UK’s involvement in Israel’s assault on Gaza. Today, more than 30 MPs have supported that call. This is not going away. We will campaign for as long as it takes to establish the truth. pic.twitter.com/JGBW40RPtu

The letter points out how the Chilcot inquiry found serious failings within the British government, which "ignored the warnings of millions of ordinary people over its disastrous decision to go to war".
It goes on: "History is repeating itself. Today, the death toll in Gaza has exceeded 61,000. Two Israeli officials are now wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
"Britain has played a highly influential role in Israel’s military operations, including the sale of weapons, the supply of intelligence and the use of Royal Air Force (RAF) bases in Cyprus.
"Transparency and accountability are cornerstones of democracy. Therefore, we are demanding an independent, public inquiry into the UK’s involvement in Israel’s military assault in Gaza.
"This inquiry should establish exactly what decisions have been taken, how these decisions have been made, and what consequences they have had. Any meaningful inquiry would require the full co-operation from government ministers involved in decision-making processes since October 2023."
