Labour MP promises 'warm welcome' as he invites Donald Trump to Scotland

A SCOTTISH Labour MP has invited Donald Trump to visit Scotland – saying he would receive a “warm welcome”.

The US president-elect was asked to visit Lewis by Torcuil Crichton, who was elected to represent Na h-Eileanan an Iar in the General Election earlier this year.

Trump’s mother, Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, originally came from the Scottish island before emigrating to the US in 1930.

She was born in Tong, the same village which Crichton’s mother is from.

The Scottish Labour MP told the Independent: “Oceans may separate our political views, but the president and I are both sons of Lewis with mothers from the same village and I thought it might be an appropriate Christmas gesture to invite him home.”

He said that Trump “would be sure to get a warm island welcome if he chose to come”.

In November, Eric Trump – the president elect’s son – said his father would be visiting Scotland in the next year for the opening of a new golf course in Aberdeenshire.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to invite Trump for a state visit to the UK in the current parliamentary term.

Last week, it was confirmed that Labour grandee Peter Mandelson would be the UK’s ambassador to the Trump administration.

However, the appointment looked shaky after Chris LaCivita, an architect of the president-elect’s 2024 election campaign, called Mandelson an “absolute moron”.

Mandleson had previously called Trump “little short of a white nationalist and racist”.

The Labour peer has indicated he believes Reform UK leader Nigel Farage could serve as a link between the UK Government and the Republican president-elect.
