Labour MP Jas Athwal criticised as landlord of 'mould and ant-infested' homes stands down as councillor

Labour MP Jas Athwal has stood down as a councillor in north-east London.

Mr Athwal's resignation from Redbridge Council comes after he was elected MP for Ilford South at last year’s general election.

Months after his election he faced heavy criticism over the state of his rental homes.

In a brief statement provided to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), a spokesperson for London Labour said: "Jas Athwal has stood down as councillor for Mayfield ward and a by-election will take place on 27th March."

Mr Athwal succeeded the party's previous incumbent Sam Tarry, after serving as the leader of Redbridge Council for a decade.

Fellow Labour councillor Bayo Alaba quit as a representative for Wanstead Park in September, two months after being elected as the MP for Southend East and Rochford.

Mr Athwal is still listed as a councillor on Redbridge Council's website and the move will not affect his role as an MP.

During his time in charge, he oversaw the construction of hundreds of new affordable homes, though Redbridge has been consistently behind target.

One of his main projects was the development of the Valentine's Park lido. Though it was initially slated to open last August, the council says it is on track to open this autumn.

In 2023, he was shortlisted for the Leader of the Year award at the 2023 LGIU (Local Government Information Unit) and CCLA Cllr Awards.

But throughout the second half of 2024, Mr Athwal faced calls to resign over the state of his rental homes and his links to a failing care home.

A BBC investigation in August uncovered ant infestations and black mould in seven rental properties he owned. Two months later, the Londoner revealed that a failing children's home, run by someone thought to be a friend of Mr Athwal's, had seen its funding from the council increase sixfold in ten years.

Labour is expected to confirm its candidates for the by-election later this week.

The party controls the council by a majority of 55 to five Conservatives, with three councillors sitting as independents.

The ward is a typical Redbridge Labour stronghold, and is currently represented by councillors Tanweer Khan and deputy leader Vanisha Solanki.
