A FORMER Labour MP who has taken a seat in the House of Lords has been called out after she previously said the institution was "rewarding cronies".
In 2022, Thangam Debbonaire appeared on the BBC saying Keir Starmer would "never exploit" the honours system "to do what Boris Johnson has done".
The clip is now being shared widely across social media after she took a seat in the Lords on Monday, with Debbonaire being accused of hypocrisy.
Debbonaire was offered a life peerage in December after having served as the Labour MP for Bristol West since 2015.
She lost to the Green Party's co-leader Carla Denyer in the new seat of Bristol Central in the 2024 General Election.
Her defeat marked a rare loss for Labour as they cruised to a resounding majority win in July.
She will now be Baroness Debbonaire of De Beauvoir Town in the London Borough of Hackney.
Alan Ferrier posted on Twitter/X following her induction into the Lords: "Thangam Debbonaire, 2022: 'This has been rewarding cronies and that's just not on, and Keir Starmer would never do that, he would never exploit the honours system to do what Boris Johnson has done.'
"Thangam Debbonaire, 2025:"
He then shared the BBC story about her being inducted into the Lords.
(Image: Peter Byrne) The apparent U-turn from Debbonaire has been blasted on social media, with one user saying: "So Thangam Debbonaire is now Baroness Debbonaire in The House of Lords. And for what? She lost, petulantly, to @carla_denyer at last year’s election. We will be seeing her on television a lot more often than Carla Denyer. That’s how ‘democracy’ works in this country."
The South Lincolnshire Greens called out the decision to offer her a peerage following her election loss.
The group posted: "Thangam Debbonaire now sits in the House of Lords for life, even though voters in Bristol kicked her out with a massive victory for the Greens in 2024. Labour lies."
Twitter/X user Ian Davison also pointed out the hypocrisy of her taking up a Lords seat, calling her a "#RedTory".
Sharing the clip of her criticising the Lords, he said: "Must be a different Thangam Debbonaire than the principled person in this clip, as this Thangam would never accept a crony peerage like the Tories she slagged off."
The Green Party’s Denyer won the Bristol Central seat with 56.6% of the vote, picking up 24,539 votes compared with 14,132 for Debbonaire.
