An incoming Labour government will bring in a Hillsborough Law
An incoming Labour government will put a new Hillsborough Law onto the statute book.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer will confirm the party's plans to bring in the new legislation - also known as the Public Authorities (Accountability) Bill - when its annual conference takes place in Liverpool in the coming days. The city will play host to the showpiece event from Sunday September 25 to Wednesday September 28.
Campaigners, including the families and survivors of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, have been calling for the creation of new laws and regulations that will help to prevent future injustices where there is state involvement. The Hillsborough Law Campaign, backed by the ECHO, is a broad coalition of bereaved families and victims of public disasters, campaigners and politicians.

Woman attacked and raped by stranger in hospital car park
Police have launched an investigation after a woman was attacked and raped by a stranger in a hospital multi-storey car park.
Merseyside Police received reports a woman was sexually assaulted in the Royal Liverpool Hospital's NCP multi-storey car park on Sunday, September 18. Officers believe the attack happened between 10.30am and 1pm and the offender was a complete stranger.
The woman is being supported by specially trained officers and an investigation is underway.

Staff at The Royal Liverpool Hospital were sent an email on September 22 confirming an incident had occurred in the car park and asked all members of staff to wear name tags and remain vigilant. They also confirmed the trust had stepped up security.
Detective Inspector Paul McVeigh said: “Incidents of this nature are very rare and while I understand that members of the public may be alarmed I want people to be reassured that we are carrying out a full and thorough investigation to establish what has taken place and apprehend the person responsible."

Mum who scammed families out of £46k admits more fraud charges
A mum of five who stole tens of thousands from families has admitted further fraud charges.
Emma Yankey walked free from court last year after admitting to a £46,000 scheme which saw her take money from families for deposits on holidays which never happened.
That plot, which targeted 25 different people, saw Yankey, from West Kirby, refuse to pay back those who had given her money after telling them the trip was cancelled.

Yesterday (Thursday), she was back before a judge to admit more charges of fraud, this time relating to charges which predate the ones she was sentenced for last year.
Liverpool Crown Court heard she fraudulently obtained a mortgage on a house in Walthamstow in London in 2013 before fraudulently selling the same property the next year. The 44 year old also obtained a fraudulent financial agreement in 2014.
Yankey spoke briefly to plead guilty to all three counts against her. She was not represented by a barrister in court due to ongoing industrial action. Read more here.
