Labour candidate promises to offer 'fresh ideas' if elected to Renfrewshire Council

A Labour candidate has promised to offer "fresh ideas" to the council if he is successful in tomorrow's election.

Jamie McGuire called for "enthusiasm and ambition" for communities such as Renfrew North and Braehead, the ward in which he is standing.

The 22-year-old, a social policy student at the University of Glasgow, highlighted issues such as the housing and cost of living crises as those that he is passionate about tackling, should he become a politician.

He also hopes that he can inspire more people his age to take an active role in local politics.

McGuire, who attended Renfrew High as a teenager, said: "We need more young people in the council.

"I don't think that experience comes with age. I know a lot of people who are older but they don't have a lot of experience.

"You get life experience at any age. Someone at 19 or 20 can have life experience from stuff they've been through.

"I wouldn't say that experience is purely based on age.

"I think we need young voices in there. There's certain issues such as the housing crisis where young people can't get on the property ladder just now.

"We need a bit of enthusiasm, a bit of ambition for our communities because I feel like we've been let down, it's time for change. We've been let down for far too long.

"There's not been any new ideas. We need fresh ideas to move the community forward.

"We've got the cost of living crisis. Everyone is feeling the squeeze.

"We need to tackle it and keep council tax low.

"We need to fund the front line, spend our council tax wisely and run Renfrewshire properly."

Having grown up in Renfrew, McGuire is eager to represent the people in his area.

"I understand the community," he added.

"We need people that understand the issues in the community and have ideas for solutions."
