The Labour leader of North Lanarkshire council is to face a challenge for his job, the Daily Record understands. Jim Logue will go head-to-head with Heather Brannan-McVey for control of one of Scotland’s largest local authorities.
The SNP took control of the council last year for the first time in their history, but lost power after the resignation of Jordan Linden as leader. Logue succeeded Linden, but it is understood Brannan-McVey will challenge for the post and the vote is on Monday.
A party source said: "Despite there being a lot of respect for Jim across the group, there’s a recognition that under his leadership we won less seats than we expected at the last election.
"There were also many members who had concerns at how the budget process was handled earlier in the year. With the North Lanarkshire SNP group in chaos, there is a feeling now is a perfect time for change."
Brannan-McVey said: "The Labour group is committed to running an effective and purposeful administration."
Logue said: “I am delighted to be putting myself forward again to be Leader of the Group and welcome any member to stand for a Group position if they wish - even if that means challenging the current leadership of the Group.
"Whatever the result, we will continue to work together to deliver for the residents of North Lanarkshire as the Council’s Administration.”
It comes after the Record revealed the Labour group leader on Glasgow council, George Redmond, would also face a contest. Councillor Philip Braat is going for the top job in Glasgow.
