Four major labor unions have jointly called on President Donald Trump to take action against China's dominance in shipbuilding, citing the negative impact on American workers and national security. The unions include the United Steelworkers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
In a letter addressed to the President, the union presidents urged for the enforcement of tariffs and penalties against Chinese vessels built in accordance with the Chinese Communist Party's plans. They also emphasized the need to revitalize America's shipbuilding capacity and workforce.
Last year, under President Joe Biden, the unions filed a petition under Section 301 of the 1974 U.S. Trade Act to address China's shipbuilding practices. The letter highlighted that China produced over 1,000 ocean-going vessels in 2023, while the United States only built fewer than 10 ships. Chinese shipyards received substantial government support, leading to their dominance in global shipbuilding orders.
The unions expressed concerns over the detrimental effects of China's actions on the domestic shipbuilding industry, citing layoffs, closures of shipyards, and the decline of the industrial base. They called for decisive measures to counter China's predatory practices.

President Trump has previously raised concerns about the decline in American shipbuilding and indicated a desire to revive the industry. He mentioned the possibility of increasing shipbuilding efforts, potentially involving allies in the process.
The White House has acknowledged the need to address China's activities in the maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding sectors. President Trump has emphasized the importance of revitalizing American shipbuilding to strengthen the country's industrial capabilities.
In recent interviews, President Trump reiterated his commitment to boosting shipbuilding in the United States, highlighting the need to regain the country's former prowess in this sector. He expressed determination to restore the nation's shipbuilding capabilities and enhance its competitiveness in the global market.
