Labor promises upgrades across Canberra's public schools

Public schools across Canberra would benefit from $150 million in upgrades if Labor is re-elected in the ACT.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said a Labor government would invest the money to upgrade toilets, classrooms, playgrounds, green spaces and staff rooms.

The fund would include $30 million dedicated to installing more heating and air conditioning in classrooms and staff rooms.

"We want every public school student to have the same equal chance at a great education. Our plan will see accessibility infrastructure upgrades like ramps, lifts, accessible toilets and sensory spaces prioritised," Mr Barr said.

A Labor government would also begin designing upgrades to the Melba Copland Secondary School and Fraser Primary School campuses in Belconnen.

"In this term, Labor has delivered hundreds of school infrastructure upgrades. From Gungahlin through to Tuggeranong, whether it's a new shade sail or upgrades to a school hall, we're continuing to make sure that every public school is a great school," Mr Barr said.

The ACT election will be held on October 19.

A Legislative Assembly inquiry in March recommended the government finalise minimum property quality standards for all ACT public schools and set out a schedule of works so all schools met the standards.

Property quality standards for ACT public schools was a recommendation made in 2019 by the ACT Auditor-General.

The committee recommended upgrades to toilets, including building unisex toilets at public schools.

The government should develop an air quality plan and ensure adequate heating and cooling in schools after the committee heard that classes were at unsafe temperatures in summer and winter.

The committee also recommended the government better publicise school infrastructure processes to promote transparency around decisions.

The ACT government's public school infrastructure renewal program has previously allocated $100 million over four years between 2021 and 2025.

In 2024-25, the program - renamed the asset renewal program - received applications for 260 individual infrastructure projects from 80 public schools. The program will fund 61 projects across 44 schools worth $23 million.

The projects include 15 schools in Belconnen, 11 schools in Gungahlin, eight schools in the South and Weston region and 10 schools in Tuggeranong.

"The ACT government continues to invest in our public schools to ensure they are great places for students to learn, and great places for staff to work," Education Minister Yvette Berry said when the projects were announced.

Funded projects include playground upgrades, new shade structures, toilet upgrades, window replacements, staff room improvements and upgrades to front office and administration areas.
