Labor promises multi-storey car park for Canberra Hospital

ACT Labor has promised to build a new multi-storey car park for Canberra Hospital to help with the parking woes on the campus.

The car park would be located on Yamba Drive. Labor has committed to starting construction on the project during the next term if they are re-elected at next month's election.

The multi-storey car park would come following the completion of the new critical services building, which has expanded the footprint and number of beds at the hospital.

But the completion of the building only resulted in about 100 new parking spaces on the campus.

"We will explore options to work with non-government partners to deliver the new car park for the hospital, with construction expected to start in the next term," a statement from the party said.

Labor has announced the new car park as part of a wider health package which mostly includes already announced commitments, including a new northside hospital.

"Labor is the only party to commit to a new public hospital in Canberra's north," the party said.

"It's a critical project that will support healthcare in our city for decades to come, and that's why we will start construction on the project in the next term."

The government has previously said the new hospital is expected to cost $1 billion. The government forcibly acquired the current North Canberra Hospital from Calvary Healthcare last year.

Labor's election commitment also includes upgrades to the Yamba Drive entry of the hospital, a new acute palliative care ward and an expansion of endoscopy services. All have previously been announced by the party and have been included in territory budgets.
