Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has spoken on 'self-inflicted wounds' after another disappointing showing for his side's offense.
The Rams are now 2-2 after a loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night, with quarterback Matthew Stafford failing to find the end zone whilst throwing an interception. The Rams quarterback has now thrown six interceptions this season - to just four touchdowns. His interception on Monday saw safety Talanoa Hufanga return it all the way for the touchdown.
This, would be his 28th career pick-six, tying him with Hall of Famer Joe Namath for the third-most thrown by any player since 1950. And whilst Cooper Kupp has continued to impress for the Rams, the rest of the offense has been highly suspect, even in wins against the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals.
But Rams head coach McVay has insisted that he feels that his team are beating themselves on that side of the ball.
He said: "The story of the night from an offensive perceptive was self-inflicted wounds. It's just above the neck errors where we're not doing the things that we are capable of and I expect us to be better than that."
Throughout McVay's time as head coach, the Rams have seemingly always had one of the more explosive offenses in the league. This year, however, it is his side's defence who have kept the team in games, with Jalen Ramsey making an incredible game-saving interception to halt the side to what would now be a 1-3 start to the season.
Speaking after the loss, Stafford said: "You know, there were some plays that we can execute better, whether it’s throwing and catching or, just assignment-wise, so a lot to clean up.
"I'm proud of the way we fought. Give them a lot of credit, it’s a good football team but like you said, one-possession game. We make a critical error there, and they capitalize on it, and that was that.”
McVay's side will face the surprisingly impressive Dallas Cowboys this Sunday, who continue to thrive offensively despite being without star quarterback Dak Prescott.
