Kyren Williams’ postgame comments suggest Cam Akers’ time with Rams is over

Before the Los Angeles Rams took the field to face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, it was announced that Cam Akers would surprisingly be a healthy scratch. Following Sunday’s 30-23 defeat to the 49ers, Kyren Williams commented on the Rams’ decision to make Akers inactive in Week 2.

Based on Williams’ postgame remarks, it sure seems like Akers’ time with the Rams is over.

“Me and Cam, we were close [in] his time here,” Williams said, via ESPN. “I’m hoping he goes somewhere that he can excel and do what he does best. Because Cam is a great football player, but even a better person. So good luck to Cam.”

With Akers sidelined, Williams assumed the starting role in the backfield for the Rams on Sunday against the 49ers. After scoring twice in Week 1 versus the Seahawks and being more effective than Akers, Williams registered 100 scrimmage yards and another two touchdowns in Week 2.

When asked about the move to make Akers inactive, Sean McVay shared that it was a ‘coach’s decision’. The emergence of Williams, along with McVay’s comfortability with Ronnie Rivers and Royce Freeman as depth options, made it easier for the coach to bench Akers.

Even though Akers’ future with the Rams is undetermined, Williams is speaking like someone who knows his teammate is headed elsewhere soon.
