Kyoji Horiguchi on Makoto Shinryu: ‘Technically, I feel like I’m more superior’

During the Bellator X Rizin 2 news conference Thursday evening, Kyoji Horiguchi answered questions from the media.

Horiguchi (30-5 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) takes on Makoto Shinryu (16-1-1 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) for the inaugural flyweight title in Saturday’s Bellator X Rizin 2 headliner, which takes place at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The event airs live on Showtime at 11 p.m. ET.

The former Rizin and Bellator bantamweight champion discussed the matchup with Shinryu, being chosen to fight for the inaugural title, and more.

Thoughts on Shinryu as a fighter

“I think he’s young, and also I think he has a very good ground game.”

“I think he’ll be ranked amongst the better ones (opponents) technically.”

On matchup with Shinryu

“Just try to finish, and win.”

“I think he’ll try to catch me or grab me. So, I’ll try to cut it and then look to strike him. Or maybe play along with him into the ground game.”

On preparing for five rounds over three

“Yes, I’ll probably have to prepare differently. I’ve been doing longer cardio exercises so I’m able to fight the five rounds and that’s different.”

On being the betting favorite

“It’s the same weight, we’re in the same weight class. I may get punched and there’s always the risk of that but technically, I feel I’m more superior. I’m better in the techniques so, should be fine.”

On being selected for inaugural flyweight title fight

“Of course Scott Coker set this new title, and I’m much appreciative that he chose me to be in this championship bout.”
