Kyogo suffers post-Celtic transfer injury setback at Rennes

A familiar injury setback has struck Kyogo once again just weeks after his Celtic departure.

The striker, 30, was forced off just minutes after coming on as a substitute for Renns during their eventual 2-0 defeat to Lille.

The Japanese star has yet to get going at the Ligue 1 club since leaving the Scottish Premiership champions for a new challenge in one of Europe's top five leagues.

The French side bought the frontman for £10m, with Jota essentially moving in the opposite direction for £9m.

Kyogo has made just one start since joining and has found himself on the bench in other games.

He was sent on to help Rennes get something from their home game against Lille last night.

But things went from bad to worse as he had to come off just moments later with a shoulder injury - something that was a recurring problem for him at Celtic.

Rennes were forced to finish the game with nine men, following a red card for Christopher Wooh.

Boss Habib Beye said: "Red cards, injuries, they don’t help but I don’t want to use them as an excuse.

"Kyogo Furuhashi's shoulder injury forces us to change system and, at that moment, we have a highlight, we had a boost of energy.

"I think our choices in the final third were not always the right ones, we lacked precision and offensive weight to put them under pressure.

"The problem is that, at one point, we played with nine, with the temporary exit of Kyogo Furuhashi.

"When you play with 10 against a team like Lille it's difficult, then with nine... But I liked the state of mind of my players.

"We had the will to want to win the match with our intentions, and with what we put in place. We were dominated but the will was there."

The defeat leaves Rennes 13th in France's top-flight, as they continue to stave off the threat of relegation.

Brendan Rodgers commented on Kyogo's shoulder flare-up during his time working with the striker at Celtic.

"He’s had this issue for a long time - since long before he came to Celtic," the Northern Irishman said. "It’s something he had in Japan and he’s managing his shoulder - and from time to time it gets a little bit irritable and sore.

“He could have surgery on it, but that probably takes him out for about four months. It’s only him that can decide that, because you can see that a lot of times he gets through games fine.

“But then sometimes he'll fall, and maybe it'll be awkward and he has an irritation. He's a 29-year-old man, so he'll understand what he wants to do."
