Kyogo absence for Rangers vs Celtic explained as Ange Postecoglou knew 'we could handle it without him'

Ange Postecoglou says there was no point in risking Kyogo against Rangers - because his team could handle the mammoth Ibrox clash without him.

The Celtic boss opened the door to the Japanese star returning for the derby having not featured since Boxing Day with a hamstring problem.

But not only was he left out of the starting XI, the 16-goal star didn't even make the bench.

It prompted fears about a recurrence of his injury but Postecoglou said he simply didn't feel the need to rush him back in.

And he hinted a return this weekend against St Johnstone may be more realistic.

He said on BBC Sportsound: “Yes he’ll be fine (to face St Johnstone).

"He was desperate to play today but when I look at our run-in we’ve got some massive games.

"He’s such an important player for us and I thought today we could handle it without him.

“To be fair he tried everything. Everywhere I turned he popped up in front of me to make sure I knew he was ready to go.

"I couldn’t walk around Lennoxtown without seeing him!

“But we’ll keep him on ice. He’s ready to go, he’ll be fine and he’ll be involved next week.”

The Australian boss was ultimately correct in his assessment as goals from Tom Rogic and Cameron Carter-Vickers helped them to a comeback win.

They have the chance to extend their lead at the top to nine points on Saturday.
