Kym Marsh to finally take part in Strictly Come Dancing 2022 after years of consideration

Kym Marsh has become the second celebrity who will be swapping their day jobs for the glitz and glam of the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom this autumn. The former Coronation Street star has signed up for the 20th series of the BBC dance contest which will launch next month.

She joins fellow former Corrie actor Will Mellor who was announced as the first contestant just before her on Thursday morning's BBC Breakfast.

In a statement Kym, 46, said: "I’ve considered doing Strictly for years but the timings never worked out. I’m so delighted that this year they have! I’m a huge fan of the show and can’t believe I’m going to go from watching at home in my pyjamas to actually dancing in front of the judges in a glittery dress, it’s unreal!"

Kym is well known for her role of Michelle Connor in Coronation Street, for which she won ‘Best Newcomer’ at both the National Television Awards and British Soap Awards. She joined the Salford-based soap in 2006 and announced in 2019 that she'd be leaving after 13 years in the role.

But her career, of course, started years before having had a successful music career, both in the band Hear’Say, which she won a place in after appearing on the show Popstars , and as a solo artist. More recently, Kym played the notorious Alex in the touring theatre production of Fatal Attraction and is currently one of the presenters of BBC One’s Morning Live.

And things are set to get a lot busier for Kym as not only has she signed for Strictly but she is soon set to star in the revival on school drama Waterloo Road which has returned to Manchester and will air later this year.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast via video call from holiday on Thursday morning, Kym told hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt: "I am really looking forward to it. I am nervous – but I am really looking forward to it."

With Kym co-hosting Morning Live alongside Gethin Jones, who competed on Strictly in 2007, she was asked if he had given her any advice. She replied: "I always joke with him. I always go: ‘Were you on Strictly? Because you never mention it’. He loves it." She did, however, admit she had not told him she had signed up, adding: "I will probably get a message later on saying, 'You never told me!'"
