Kylie Jenner uses a designer-approved tip to put her spin on this classic dining room color scheme

While dining spaces can be primary hubs for lively, home entertaining, taking a muted approach to decor is a tried and true way to ensure that there is a serene backdrop for a bustling, communal space.

We're taking cues from Kylie Jenner, who recently shared a video on her TikTok page of her singing the ABC's with her son at her dining table. In true Jenner fashion, the room is sleek and sophisticated, with a greige loveseat sitting against the smooth, stone table. Meanwhile, the wood bowls bring a touch of nature to the modern space.

Decorating with neutrals is common practice for many homeowners, and experts say that the dining room is an excellent choice for the color palette to thrive.

'A natural dining space, characterized by soft hues, organic materials, and minimalistic design, exudes a calm and inviting ambiance,' says designer Nina Lichtenstein. 'The neutral color palette—comprising shades of white, beige, gray, and soft earth tones—creates a backdrop that feels both expansive and comforting. This simplicity allows for a focus on form, texture, and subtle details, making the dining area a peaceful retreat from the busyness of daily life.'

While neutrals may be more subdued than their colorful contemporaries, Lichtenstein says that maintaining visual interest is key to a successful, neutral rooms can benefit from texture and pattern.

'Incorporate various textures to add dimension,' she says. 'Mix natural wood finishes with woven placemats, linen table runners, and ceramic dinnerware. Textured wall treatments, such as shiplap or grasscloth wallpaper, can also enhance the tactile appeal. Subtle patterns in neutral tones can create visual intrigue without overwhelming the space. Consider patterned upholstery on dining chairs, geometric rugs, or delicate motifs on table linens.'

Additionally, as Jenenr has done by implementing wood bowls, bringing in nature-inspired pieces can bring harmony to a contemporary space.

'Bring the outdoors in with elements like potted plants, fresh flowers, and botanical centerpieces,' Lichtenstein says. 'A large wooden dining table with a live-edge finish or a stone-topped buffet can anchor the room with organic beauty.'

Finally, consider incorporating decor on dining tables, as Lichtenstein notes that these are the centerpieces of most dining rooms.

'Elevate your table settings with layered place settings,' she says. 'Start with a neutral tablecloth or runner, add chargers, dinner plates, and mix-and-match napkins. Finish with elegant flatware and glassware for a complete look.'
