It was an epic World Cup final, but in the end Lionel Messi came out on top during the battle of the superstar forwards over Kylian Mbappe.
The Argentina captain claimed the trophy in Qatar after as his Paris Saint-Germain teammate Mbappe watched on after the France star wrote his name in the history books by becoming only the second player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final. The duo went head to head in the race for the Golden Boot with five goals apiece going into the game, and that appeared to spark a personal rivalry between the pair on the pitch.
After Argentina had thrown away a two-goal advantage thanks to two goals from Mbappe, the 23-year-old jogged back to the halfway line and looked towards his teammate. Ahead of Argentina restarting the match at 2-2, Mbappe could be seen looking at Messi before clenching his fist pointedly in celebration.
Mbappe would go on to secure the Golden Boot with a third goal in extra-time. However, the Argentina captain would have the last laugh as the lifted the trophy in the Middle East.
