Kylian Mbappe breaks silence after World Cup final hat-trick and defeat

Global superstar Kylian Mbappe has broken his silence after France suffered the agony of losing the World Cup final to Argentina in arguably the greatest final in the history of the tournament.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward dragged Les Bleus back into the match with two goals in 90 seconds to tie the match at 2-2, forcing extra-time. Lionel Messi appeared to have won the cup for the South Americans when he scored his second goal of the match in the 108th minute, but Mbappe wasn't done and when France were awarded a penalty just two minutes from the end of extra-time, the 23-year-old converted his second spot-kick of the match to make the score 3-3, becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final since Sir Geoff Hurst in 1966.

Both Mbappe and Messi scored from the 12 yards in the subsequent penalty shoot-out but Argentina 'keeper Emiliano Martínez saved from Kingsley Coman before Real Madrid midfielder Aurelian Tchouameni dragged his own effort wide, allowing Gonzalo Montiel to secure a 4-2 shoot-out triumph for Argentina, handing them their first World Cup since the Diego Maradona-inspired team of 1986.

The match had been billed as a bout between Messi and Mbappe to determine who was the world's best player and it was the 35-year-old former Barcelona star who came out on top, even though his PSG teammate scored a hat-trick in response to Messi's brace.

Mbappe looked dejected has he received the tournament's Golden Boot award for his eight goals, but has now spoken on social media for the first time since the final.

Posting on Twitter with a photo of him holding the top scorer award, he simply wrote: "We will return," with a French tricolour flag and a praying emoji.

Mbappe had already won the World Cup one with France in Russia four years ago, but now teammate Messi has crowned his career with the title of World Champion that he undoubtedly deserved after a remarkable career.
