Kyler Murray contract extension talks going smoothly; new deal could come before camp

The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp July 26. That is a date many have their eye on as a target for a contract extension for quarterback Kyler Murray.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury wants it to be done before camp and teammate Justin Pugh does, too, hoping that the focus can return to just football.

While there has not been any noise on the matter for some time, according to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, fans shouldn’t worry about whether a deal will get done or not.

“I wouldn’t sweat the Kyler Murray contract negotiations,” he said via his Twitter account.  “Based on my conversations, talks are going smooth and getting a deal before camp remains a very reasonable likelihood. The drama of February feels long in the rear view.”

Murray, entering his fourth NFL season, seeks to be paid like one of the best young quarterbacks in the league. A new deal could average more than $40 million per year.

There was drama earlier this offseason with a report about his maturity. His agent issued a public statement in February seeking a new deal and presented the team with a contract offer but after other quarterback extensions, his offer was rescinded.

Murray, in three seasons, has been Offensive Rookie of the Year and selected to the Pro Bowl twice.

He led the Cardinals to an 11-6 season and their first playoff berth since 2015 but were blown out in the first round. The Cardinals lost four of their final five games in the regular season after starting 10-2.
