Kyle Shanahan sees no scenario where Jimmy Garoppolo is back with 49ers

Kyle Shanahan isn’t typically definitive about the team’s future roster decisions. He took an unusually decisive tone Wednesday in his season-ending press conference though when asked about Jimmy Garoppolo’s future with the 49ers.

Last season there was plenty of hemming and hawing from the 49ers’ head coach on what they were doing with the veteran QB, who was still under contract for one more season. This year with Garoppolo headed for unrestricted free agency, Shanahan left little doubt about a possible reunion.

“No,” Shanahan said. “I don’t see any scenario of that.”

That’s a far cry from his infamous “I can’t guarantee anybody in the world will even be alive on Sunday” deflection about Garoppolo’s future with the club.

Shanahan and general manager John Lynch on Wednesday in their press conference exuded optimism that QB Brock Purdy would be ready to play football sometime early in camp after getting his elbow injury healed. There are still some question marks about the extent of the repair needed, but Lynch said the team believes he’s headed toward the surgical procedure that would have him ready to go in six months.

In the meantime, Shanahan said the team will also roll with Trey Lance as their QB1. Any decisions about a camp battle haven’t been made.

While there’s still question marks and uncertainty under center for the 49ers, it appears we can rule out a return for Garoppolo.
