Kyle Shanahan gives updates on veteran absences at OTAs

The 49ers had a handful of noticeable absences when media attended Day 2 of OTAs. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was optimistic about the eventual arrival of most of the veteran players who weren’t on hand for Tuesday’s session, with the exception of center Alex Mack, who got a more cryptic response from the 49ers’ head coach.

Mack, Fullback Kyle Juszczyk, left tackle Trent Williams, defensive end Nick Bosa and wide receiver Deebo Samuel were all not in the building Tuesday.

“Yeah, Juice got here for OTA one, so he’s been here,” Shanahan said. “Today he had a personal thing with his family, so he had to leave today, but he was here yesterday. Trent, I expect to be here towards the end, we’ll see. I know he’ll at least be here, from what he says, when it’s mandatory and same with Bosa, and I’m expecting Deebo also.”

The team may be hopeful Samuel shows up for mandatory minicamp in mid-June, but it seems like it might take a Herculean effort form Shanahan and the front office to mend fences with the All-Pro receiver in the next few weeks.

Mack was also absent while on his honeymoon, but Shanahan remained mum on whether the 36-year-old would be back for a 14th season.

“I’ve talked to him here and there. I’ve got a good idea,” Shanahan said. “I’ve been in touch with him throughout the offseason, through his wedding, through his honeymoon. He’s in some other country right now, but I’ve got a pretty good idea of what he’s doing.”

Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have been adamant they’re going to let Mack make his decision known to the public, and that remained the case Tuesday.

“I’m going to leave that up to Alex,” he said, “but I’ve got a pretty good idea. I think you guys do too.”

The 49ers’ mandatory minicamp will take place June 14-16. That’s the only mandatory portion of the offseason program prior to training camp.
