The San Francisco 49ers seem very settled on the idea of quarterback Brock Purdy holding down the starting job.
Speaking with Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan talked about the team’s sharp confidence in Purdy leading the team’s offense.
It’s a confidence so ironclad that, according to Shanahan, it’d take something absolutely improbable to push Purdy out of the job.
“He would have to melt in practice to lose it,” Shanahan told Breer about Purdy’s status as the team’s starting quarterbacks. “And Brock’s too good of a player to melt in practice—and so are the other guys.”
Well, that’s a pretty ringing endorsement of Purdy’s status, and it doesn’t seem that “the other guys,” 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance or 2023 free agent signing Sam Darnold, will seize the job in preseason play even if they perform well on the field.
The only thing holding Purdy back right now is his health, as he is still recovering from an injury sustained in January. However, it looks as if Prudy is on track to possibly start in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, it sounds like the 49ers feel good either way even if Purdy needs more time to heal up. It sounds like the job will be his when he’s ready.
