DENVER — Kyle Freeland won’t be leaving his hometown anytime soon.
The left-handed pitcher and the Rockies have agreed to a five-year contract extension that will keep the Thomas Jefferson High grad in his native Denver through 2026, the team announced. The contract is worth $64.5 million, a source confirmed to The Denver Post. ESPN’s Jeff Passan first reported the deal.
“We have been in talks with Kyle for a long time and are glad to finalize this deal that secures his future in Denver,” Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt said in a news release. “Kyle has been a steady part of this rotation since his debut and we are excited to have him in a Rockies uniform for at least the next five seasons.”
Despite getting off to a rocky start this season — 0-2 with a 10.00 ERA through two starts — Freeland is the latest Rockies player to sign a long-term deal with the club as Schmidt looks to secure the team’s roster well into the future.
Right-hander Antonio Senzatela, third baseman Ryan McMahon and first baseman/designated hitter C.J. Cron have also either re-signed or agreed to extensions since Schmidt took over as the permanent GM last summer.
