'Kung Fu Panda 4' continued its successful run at the top of the South Korean box office during a notably quiet weekend for cinema-goers. The animated franchise maintained a strong position, holding nearly 44% of the market share and experiencing only a 32% drop in revenue compared to the previous week. Despite the lack of new competition, the film managed to earn $1.91 million between Friday and Sunday, bringing its total cumulative earnings to $8.48 million after 12 days in theaters.
'Exhuma,' which had previously held the top spot for six weeks, remained in second place with earnings of $772,000 and an 18% market share. Since its release on Feb. 22, the film has garnered an impressive $82.7 million from 11.8 million viewers.
While the top two films demonstrated resilience, the overall box office performance was lackluster, with total weekend revenue across the country's cinemas dropping to just $4.37 million, marking the lowest figure in over a year. The upcoming release of 'The Roundup: Punishment,' the fourth installment in the popular crime comedy action series starring Don Lee, is expected to inject new life into the market.
'The Last 10 Years,' a Japanese romance film that debuted in Korea in May 2023, secured third place with weekend earnings of $319,000 and a cumulative total of $2.87 million. In fourth place was 'Troll Factory,' a Korean crime drama focusing on online scams, which earned $201,000 over the weekend, bringing its total earnings to $6.65 million after four weeks in theaters.
'Dune: Part Two' claimed sixth place with earnings of $146,000, benefiting from higher ticket prices. The film, released in Korea on Feb. 28, has grossed $16.9 million from 1.99 million ticket sales. 'The First Omen,' a U.S. horror film, earned $125,000 over the weekend, reaching a total of $1.30 million after three weeks in Korean theaters.
'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' earned $73,000, accumulating $3.68 million since its release on March 27. Lastly, 'Leon,' a re-released Luc Besson-directed title from nearly thirty years ago, secured tenth place with weekend earnings of $40,800.
