Kristjaan Speakman has confirmed that Sunderland will not be taking up its option to buy Edouard Michut this summer. Paris St-Germain midfielder Michut spent last season on loan with the Black Cats, and the deal included a fixed fee - thought to be in the region of £2.5m - to make the move permanent if both Sunderland and the player agreed.
But, following talks with the player and his representatives, sporting director Speakman says a 'mutual' decision has been taken for Michut to return to France. Speakman said: "Edouard played a prominent role throughout his loan spell at the Stadium of Light and we thank him for his contribution.
"He is highly respected by all at Sunderland AFC but following a period of dialogue with the player and his representatives, all parties mutually agreed it was best to pursue other opportunities at this moment in time. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Edou and wish him well for the future."
Michut made 28 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland and scored one goal. He helped the Black Cats secure a top six finish and a play-off place as the club made its return to the Championship following four years in League One.
While at Sunderland, the 20-year-old was called up by France at U20 level, having previously represented his country ar U16, U17, and U19 levels. He said his farewells to Sunderland on social media last week, tweeting: "Hi Sunderland fans, thanks for all the great times and great hospitality.
"Disappointed we didn't end up at wembley. I will never forget this season. Thanks to all of you"
