Kristaps Porzingis Out For Game 3 With Tendon Injury

Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis talks with reporters before basketball practice, Tuesday, June 11, 2024, in Dallas, in preparation for Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks. (

Kristaps Porzingis was sidelined for Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks due to a rare tendon injury in his lower left leg sustained in the previous game. The Celtics made the announcement just before the game, with coach Joe Mazzulla indicating that Porzingis' status for Game 4 was uncertain.

Porzingis, who had recently returned after missing 10 playoff games due to a right calf strain, played a crucial role in helping the Celtics secure a 2-0 series lead against his former team. However, he felt discomfort in his leg after colliding with Dallas center Dereck Lively II in the previous game, leading to his early exit in the third quarter.

The 28-year-old Latvian has a tear in the tissue holding tendons in place, which is unrelated to his previous calf injury. Al Horford, 38, started at center in Porzingis' absence and contributed to the team's efforts against the Mavericks.

Despite undergoing constant treatment and following medical advice, Porzingis was unable to participate in Game 3. Mazzulla praised Porzingis' dedication and work ethic throughout the playoffs, emphasizing that the decision to sit out was made in the player's best interest.

Having been traded from the Mavericks nearly 2 1/2 years ago, Porzingis has yet to play a game in Dallas since the trade. Originally drafted by the New York Knicks in 2015, he became an All-Star before a torn ACL injury sidelined him for the entire 2018-19 season.

Following subsequent trades, Porzingis found himself with the Celtics, where he has been a key contributor when healthy. His absence in Game 3 highlighted the team's reliance on his presence in the lineup, with hopes for his return in the upcoming games of the Finals.
