Kris Boyd needs Rangers 'ice bucket' as gutted pundit reveals he's off to numb the Champions League pain

Dejected Kris Boyd admitted he's off to dunk his head in a "bucket of ice" to numb the pain of Rangers' disastrous return to the Champions League.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst' s side were mauled 4-0 by Ajax on Wednesday just days after Celtic put them to the sword by the same scoreline, ensuring the Ibrox club's first night back on the grandest European stage swiftly descended into a nightmare.

Goals from Edson Alvarez, Steven Berghuis, Mohammed Kudus and Steven Bergwijn but a toiling Rangers to the sword in Amsterdam and a watching Boyd insists it was simply too easy for the Eredivisie champions. And he fears the worst could be yet to come, reasoning that Ajax aren't even among the tournament's very best.

Rangers still have Liverpool and Napoli to come as former Ibrox star Boyd said on Sky Sports: "Rangers were totally outclassed tonight with a very good Ajax team. I know a lot of people will say that's what you get the top of the Champions League but I don't even think Ajax are a top end side.

"They're a very good team but from Rangers' point of view, they were way off it tonight. Lacking responsibility in terms of picking up your men at set-plays, far too easy, very passive, not getting near anyone. It was a very, very disappointing return to the elite of European football for Rangers.

"Losing 4-0 at the weekend, 4-0 again tonight and you go to Aberdeen at the weekend. The players are going to have to deal with the criticism that's coming their way. They have to pick themselves up and go again but it's not going to be easy at Aberdeen.

"Giovanni van Bronckhorst has a big job between now and Saturday."

The pundit managed to raise a laugh and a smile before he departed, adding: "Goodnight, at least it's an early one and I can get off-air. I'm going home to put a bucket of ice over my head!"
