Kris Boyd in Steven Gerrard Rangers return verdict as pundit weighs in on comeback speculation

Kris Boyd reckons a Rangers return for Steven Gerrard would be a non-starter.

The former Ibrox manager's sacking from Aston Villa and Giovanni van Bronckhorst's increasingly precarious situation has prompted social media speculation over a potential comeback. Gerrard won Rangers the Premiership title in 2020/21, stopping Celtic clinching 10 In A Row in the process, before departing midway through the following season, a decision badly received by a section of supporters.

But his stint at Villa lasted just 11 months and he was sacked following a 3-0 thumping from Fulham last week. Boyd insists he's keen to see Gerrard back in management as soon as possible but has written off the prospect of a second stint in Glasgow because he thinks the former Liverpool captain's work at Rangers is very much done.

Asked if it was a possibility, Boyd told Sky Sports: “No, I don’t think so. I think Steven has come up and done the job he needed to do in Scotland. He stopped Celtic from winning 10IAR.

"Moved on and it wasn’t meant to be at Aston Villa. Hopefully, you will see him back because he is an iconic figure of the game and you want to see him manage.”
