Kris Boyd & Chris Sutton at odds over half-way Premiership team of the season

With the Premiership now in hibernation for the winter break, it seems like a reasonable time for reflection.

That's exactly what Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton were asked to do by Sky Sports as they selected their respective teams of the season to date.

Both were in agreement over the places of Rangers' Jack Butland, James Tavernier and Abdallah Sima. The punditry pair were also aligned in their views over Celtic stars Luis Palma, Matt O'Riley and Callum McGregor, with Hearts' Lawrence Shankland the other constant across both teams.

The former Rangers and Celtic strikers sparked debate over the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Kyogo and Connor Goldson, though.

You can watch Sky Sports' full five-minute clip above, but here were the main talking points.

Sutton said: "Can I just say, he was heavily influenced in the car park by James McFadden. That is true, that's not fake news."

Boyd replied: "Lies. I was close, there was a few. Kye Rowles was unlucky to just miss out. [Danny] Armstrong, [Stuart] Findlay and well, you're favourite Kyogo, but I always think if you're at the Old Firm you should be the top goalscorer in the league. Kyogo is not at this moment, so that's why I've gone with Shankland and [Bojan] Miovski."

Sutton: "There is something about Kris and Kyogo. There is. The reason he has to have Kyogo in is because he's a big game player. In the decisive games, who has been the guy that has stepped up? Kyogo.

"Just because he's gone heavy on Shankland, he doesn't sort of want to give Kyogo any credit. Which is fine, I don't think Kyogo will lose any sleep over it."

Boyd: "Is this my team or your team? Are you trying to explain to everybody why I've not put him in?

"Miovski in a poor Aberdeen team has scored more goals than Kyogo. Shankland's scored more. He's scored what, two in 12 games?"

The focus then turned to Sutton's team. He said: "You've got to have Tavernier in, albeit there is this question mark about him defensively, but his numbers are incredible.

"Centre-halves, there's a good debate. Liam Scales stepped up when he had the opportunity, but I can't ever leave Cameron Carter-Vickers out of my team. He is always going to be in my team."

Boyd: "He's the best defender in Scotland. My point is, he was injured at the start of the season and he's injured at this moment in time. Lewis Mayo has played in more or less every game. Kilmarnock have been excellent.

"If I had to pick my best team overall from everyone, I'd have Carter-Vickers in it. But you're asking who's been the best players in the first six months of the season."

Sutton: "He has played and he's been good. He's the best in the country.

"Alongside him, and Rangers' defensive record has been excellent, but I'm going to go for Frankie Kent. He (Goldson) has been good, but I'm just prioritising Kent and his importance to Hearts. I think he's been massive, but I take your point. Goldson and [Leon] Balogun I can say 'Well done guys, you've played well,' but I'm just going to put Kent in ahead of you."

KRIS BOYD'S XI: Butland; Tavernier, Mayo, Scales, Beck; Palma, O'Riley, McGregor, Sima; Shankland, Miovski.

CHRIS SUTTON'S XI: Butland; Tavernier, Carter-Vickers, Kent, Cochrane; Palma, O'Riley, McGregor, Sima; Shankland, Kyogo.
