Korean Film 'Exhuma' Breaks Box Office Records With Chilling Storyline

Exhuma korean film

Director Jang Jae-hyun recently shared insights into his film 'Exhuma' at a press conference, revealing that the storyline was inspired by his childhood encounter with a shamanistic exhumation. The movie delves into the unsettling consequences of unearthing buried trauma during such rituals.

The plot revolves around a wealthy Korean American family plagued by a mysterious curse that torments its members, including a newborn. Seeking help from shamanistic practitioners, the family embarks on a journey to address the supernatural affliction.

The cast features renowned actors Choi Min-sik, Kim Go-eun, Lee Do-hyun, and Yoo Hae-jin in pivotal roles. Choi portrays a seasoned geomancer, while Kim and Lee embody the roles of shamans tasked with conducting the exhumation ceremony. Yoo plays the mortician assisting in the process.

As the narrative unfolds, the characters grapple with the repercussions of disturbing ancestral and national traumas buried at the exhumation site. Despite their earnest efforts to appease the supernatural forces through elaborate rituals, they are unprepared for the terrifying events that ensue.

'Exhuma' premiered in Korea to critical acclaim, becoming the highest-grossing South Korean film of 2024 within weeks of its release. The movie's success can be attributed to the stellar performances of Choi, Kim, and Lee, who bring authenticity and intensity to their portrayals of shamanistic practices and the ensuing dread.

Choi Min-sik, known for his roles in acclaimed films like 'Oldboy' and 'I Saw The Devil,' delivers a compelling performance alongside Kim Go-eun, celebrated for her work in popular dramas. Lee Do-hyun and Yoo Hae-jin also shine in their respective roles, adding depth to the ensemble cast.

Director Jang Jae-hyun, recognized for his previous works exploring themes of shamanism and exorcism, continues his cinematic exploration with 'Exhuma.' The film, distributed by Well Go USA, is set to premiere in Los Angeles before expanding to audiences across the U.S. and Canada.
