VISAKHAPATNAM: The Vizag city police arrested four people, including the manager of Aakash Byju’s, Visakhapatnam branch and the owner of Sadhana ladies’ hostel in connection with the suspicious death of a Kolkata girl student Riti Saha (17).
It may be recalled that Riti hailed from Kolkata city of West Bengal and was undergoing NEET coaching at Achiver’s College under the supervision of Aakash Byju’s in Vizag city and she stayed at Sadhana hostel at Dondaparthy locality under fourth-town police station limits in Vizag.
Riti fell from the third floor of her hostel building on July 14 night and she lost her breath due to Traumatic brain injury (TBI), Hypovolemic shock, Polytrauma at a corporate hospital in Vizag city on July 16.
The arrested accused have been identified as Gannu Kumari, warden of Sadhana ladies’ hostel-II, Etcherla Surya Kumari, owner of Sadhana ladies’ hostels, Gangumalla Naga Venkata Durga Ravi Kanth, assistant manager (operations) of Aakash Byju’s, Visakhapatnam branch and Gundu Rajeswara Rao, manager of Aakash Byju’s, Visakhapatnam branch.
The Vizag city police said that initially they registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC (suspicious death) in Riti Saha’s death and it was changed to Section 304 (II) of IPC for further investigation.
The police said that their investigation has revealed that the negligence of the four people was the reason for Riti's suicide.
Riti’s father Sukdeb Saha has alleged foul play in his daughter’s death. He had approached AP high court seeking a fair probe. An FIR was registered with Netaji Nagar police station in Kolkata. A police team from Kolkata visited the college hostel in Vizag city from where 17-year-old student Riti Saha fell and later succumbed to injuries.
DCP (law and order) V Vidhya Sagar Naidu said Riti Saha’s death was a suicide as the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) examined the footage from CCTV cameras in the hostel vicinity and submitted a report that there was no foul play in the case and it was a suicide. We had seized the victim’s belongings. Our probe showed that Riti had suicidal tendencies, he added.
