KOLKATA: In a major drug haul by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Kolkata, at least 16.14kg heroin was seized from three passengers — two Kenyans and a Malawian— at the city airport on Thursday night.
The passengers were coming to India from Dubai.
The market value of the seized contraband is approximately Rs 113 crore.
The DRI officials, working on specific inputs, nabbed the trio, two women and a man in their mid-thirties. The two Kenyans came to India on a medical visa and they showed that to the officials. They claimed that they were going to New Delhi for a medical purpose.
The officials, however, could not be convinced and started conducting searches. They found packets of contraband carefully hidden inside the false bottom partition in their trolley luggage. Gradually, the officials found out nearly 14 packets of the contraband kept inside plastic zip pouches concealed inside the bags.
The officials feel that the drugs were destined for Delhi and the accused had planned to carry that in domestic flights.
