KOLKATA: An assistant sub-inspector of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) dep-loyed at the Indian Museum was shot dead and an assistant commandant injured after a head constable in the force opened fire in the barracks on Saturday evening, shortly after the museum had shut for the day.
Police sources said the fragging incident appeared to have been triggered by assistant commandant Subir Ghosh denying the constable, Akshay Kumar Mishra, leave after his father's death three days ago. Mishra, a resident of Dhenkanal in Odisha, was later arrested by Kolkata Police and taken into custody.
Ghosh leads a 58-member CISF force that is in charge of the country's largest and oldest museum and its priceless artefacts.
Police said, around 6.15pm, all CISF personnel had gathered outside the barracks for attendance. Mishra suddenly snatched an AK-47 from a sentry and began firing at Ghosh. ASI Ranjit Sarengi came in front of Ghosh and was struck by several bullets while the others ran for cover. Ghosh tried to flee with Mishra in hot pursuit but was struck by a bullet in the arm. Mishra then hid himself in a room in the barracks. Ghosh and Sarengi were rushed to SSKM Hospital by the others in a bullet-riddled vehicle but Sarengi was declared dead.
