KOLKATA: Four organs of a brain dead woman, Manjubala Bhakta (58), were retrieved and transplanted to four patients on Sunday.
The woman was transported from AMRI Hospitals, Salt Lake, to Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (IPGMER) to facilitate the organ donation. The homemaker from Habra was admitted to the Salt Lake hospital on July 2 with severe head injury.
On Sunday, the heart of Bhakta was transported to Medica Superspecilaty Hospital and transplanted into a 33-year-old man while her two kidneys and liver were transplanted at IPGMER.
Bhakta had pledged her body with Ganadrpan in 1994, so her family contacted the organisation when AMRI doctors informed them that the patient was brain dead.
The hospital does not have transplant licence, so health officials and ROTTO were roped in when her family wanted to donate her organs.
"In the past two days every minute mattered to us when it comes to maintaining her organs in good condition was concerned. After several nail biting moments our team has done a wonderful job to hand over organs of the deceased in good shape," said professor Sarbari Swaika who heads the intensive care team at IPGMER's Trauma Care Centre.
"We helped the family for the organ donation. The woman's body will be donated to the anatomy department of RG Kar Medical College on Monday," said Shyamal Chatterjee of Ganadarpan.
