Grassland on the edge of an industrial estate in Knowsley could soon become home to nearly 400 vans after plans for a huge vehicle storage facility were submitted to Knowsley Council.
The proposals involve transforming the land at the Britonwood Trading Estate in Kirkby, into an operation van storage facility, which would have access from Faraday Road.
According to documents submitted to the council by the applicant Network Space, the development would create a dedicated storage facility for vans used to operate an existing distribution warehouse at Hornhouse Lane in Knowsley Industrial Park.

The facility would enable a more sustainable approach to distribution, according to the applicant, as the company moves towards increasing electric vehicle usage.
In addition, it would remove the need for unnecessary trips by drivers and reduce the amount of vehicles being stored at the drivers’ own homes overnight, according to planning documents submitted as part of the application.
This means drivers would “arrive at the site by various means of transport, collect a van and leave the site to make their deliveries. Once all deliveries have been made, drivers would return the vans to the site, collect their own vehicles (if they have driven to the site), or travel home by other means of transport.”
The development will help towards creating a “modal shift” according to the application, with aims for drivers to use public transport to access the site, thereby reducing the number of journeys undertaken by drivers.
Alongside space for 390 vans, there would also be provision for bikes and motorcycles with a 10mph limit in operation at the site.
The application is viewable online and is currently open for comments before planning officers decide on the next steps.
