A man attacked his housemate with a knife, demanding they transfer him all their money and then held another hostage, a court was told.
Christopher Antill - who shared a house with three others in Bull Head Street, Wigston, Leicestershire - forced his way into the first victim's room in the early hours.
He told him to transfer "all the money you have" into his bank account, reports Leicestershire Live.
The 38-year-old then repeatedly punched the man in the face and slashed his arms with a lock blade when the mobile banking transaction of £1,000 failed.
The shaken victim was left with a double-fractured eye socket and needed a surgical titanium plate inserting to replace the smashed bone.
Antill also kicked his way through another housemate's locked bedroom door.
He held the knife to the petrified woman's throat and threatened to stab her - then ripped up bedsheets to make a noose before barricading himself in the room, the court was told.
The defendant placed furniture behind the door and threatened to kill the captive housemate.
He shouted to police on the other side that she would die if they forced entry during the two-and-a-half-hour standoff.
The officers believed it was a serious death threat, said Katya Saudek, prosecuting.
One described seeing "fear in her eyes" as the housemate was led to safety.
Antill was heard on police bodycam footage played in court making claims he suffered harm as a child and that his complaint about it had gone unheeded by officers.
The standoff with police continued even after releasing the hostage before negotiators persuaded him to give himself up.
Antill denied causing grievous bodily harm, with intent, and blackmailing the male housemate.
The court heard the first victim did not owe the defendant any money and there was no reason to justify a bank transfer.
Antill also pleaded not guilty to falsely imprisoning the female housemate, who told the jury she had "never in my life been so scared" and feared she would be killed.
A jury deliberated for 43 minutes before convicting Antill, unanimously, on all three counts.
Antill chose to represent himself at trial, without defence counsel, but partway through the prosecution case he decided not to remain in the dock and the proceedings continued in his absence, while he waited in the court cells and refused to take part or give evidence.
The male housemate told the jury he and the defendant had lived at the multi-occupancy address, with shared facilities, without any difficulties for about a year.
He said he believed Antill worked long hours on a building site, adding they "weren't friends" but would say hello in passing.
He described how on July 29 last year the defendant kicked down his door and made vile accusations before handing him his bank details and demanding he transfer the money.
The man said he refused at first and his "heart was pounding" after he saw Antill had a knife, before kicking him in the groin in an effort to escape.
He said Antill grabbed him by the throat and pushed him onto the bed, leaving him fearing for his life.
After surgery on his eye socket, he was off work for six weeks and still suffers from numbness and eyesight issues.
The female victim said Antill ordered her to "live stream" after kicking down her door - but she refused.
She added that he kept threatening to stab her before changing his mind, saying he wouldn't hurt her.
The Recorder, Benet Brandreth QC, adjourned sentencing to a date to be fixed and ordered the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
Antill was remanded back into custody and will be given the opportunity to instruct counsel to mitigate on his behalf at sentencing.
