Knife-wielding man storms Irish shop and threatens staff as gardaí rush to scene

A man has been arrested after a terrifying ordeal at a shop in the capital on Wednesday evening.

Gardaí responded quickly to the scene after receiving reports of a man wielding a knife storming a shop on Kimmage Road Lower in Dublin 6 on Wednesday evening.

The incident happened at approximately 8.15pm when staff members were accosted by the man and threatened with a knife. It's understood the man demanded cash.

Staff handed over some cash and the lone suspect fled on foot but was later caught by gardaí who had rushed to the scene. No staff members of members of the public were injured during the incident.

Gardaí arrested the man early on Thursday morning after making enquiries into the suspect's identity.

The man, aged in his 40s, is currently being detained at Terenure Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

In a statement to the Irish Mirror, officers confirmed: "Gardaí have arrested a man in connection with the robbery of a premises that occurred on the evening of Wednesday, 17th August, 2022, in the Dublin 6 area.

"At approximately 8:15pm, a lone male entered a shop on Kimmage Road Lower and threatened staff with a knife, demanding the contents of cash registers in the store.

"The male then fled the scene on foot with a sum of cash. No persons were injured during the course of this incident.

"As a result of Garda enquiries into this incident involving a number of Garda units in the Dublin City area, Gardaí arrested a male in Crumlin, Dublin 12, in the early hours of Thursday, 18th August, 2022.

"The man, aged in his 40s, is currently being detained at Terenure Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984."

Investigations are ongoing.
